Tank guns capable of firing armour-piercing shells at ten times the speed of sound came a step closer last week with the opening of a new firing range on the Scottish coast. Scientists at the Electro-Magnetic Launcher Facility at Kirkcudbright, will test ‘rail guns’ at the firing range. Rail guns use electromagnetic pulses instead of gunpowder to fire shells. The shell sits between two conducting rails in the barrel of the launcher, and an electrical pulse of 3 million amps passes between the rails through an armature behind the shell. The resulting magnetic force accelerates the shell out of the 7-metre barrel, at between 2000 and 4000 metres a second. The Anglo-American research project will study whether the barrel and the ammunition can withstand the stresses of firing,
