Ten European computer and software firms banded together this week to create the European Software Institute, a non-profit research establishment aimed at developing new techniques for writing computer software. It will employ 50 scientists and will be based in Bilbao, Spain. The ESI includes companies that design software and companies that use it, in an effort to boost Europe’s share of the market for large software packages dedicated to particular applications, such as industrial design. George Grunberg of the French computer firm Bull, the head of the ESI, says it will transform software design ‘from craft activity to engineering discipline’. The ESI wants other European firms to join, and has set up a network of academic scientists and software users to advise on new techniques and needs. British Aerospace, Sema Group, Logica and Lloyd’s Register of Britain, Siemens Nixdorf of Germany, Bull and Cap Gemini Sogeti of France, and Olivetti and Finsiel of Italy have signed up,
